As the tiltrotor took him back to Lauriel’s Arcolith, Anak idly browsed his copy of the Summa Theologica . It was hardbound, of course. He liked the feel of the crisp vinyl pages under his fingers, and he could have whatever he liked. He also liked to read in the original, even if he didn’t know the language, so it was also bilingual: Latin on the left, Human on the right.

The children’s education from Mr. Smith had included him telling them two creeds, both in dead languages. The first was of allegiance to the forgotten flag of a fallen nation, written in one of the precursor languages to Human. The second was in Latin, and Anak, remembering only small details, had looked it up again. Anak had studied enough Earth history to understand the meaning of the former. He was now learning the meaning of the latter.

Anak had always been vaguely interested in mortals’ religions, ever since Mr. Smith had first introduced the concept. Philosophy was one of his favorite hobbies. So when he passed over the sheer audacity of arguing over nonexistent entities and ascribing personalities (no less than three of them) to Omnipotence, he found himself oddly drawn to theology.
